Family friendly things to do in Wanaka during winter

Quieter than nearby travel hub Queenstown, Wanaka has grown from a sleepy skier hangout to a real destination.

Photography
If you have some time in the afternoon or you are out and about at sunset then Wanaka is a photographers dream. In fact, you don’t even need to be a skilled photographer to snap iconic pictures here. New Zealand has done all the hard work over the years carving out a spectacular landscape. Find the floating trees or take a drive around Lake Wanaka for a rewarding end to the day.
Cardrona Hotel
As you leave ‘Cardies’ don’t miss out on the Cardrona Hotel at the base of the access road. Nestling away on the Crown Range Road since 1863, the Cardrona Hotel is one of New Zealand’s oldest hotels. It a cool little spot to chill out late in the afternoon, while warming up with chips and hot drinks.

Clip 'N Climb
The funky climbing that is quickly spreading across the world has another home in Wanaka. Super popular with families and youth groups you don’t need to jam your feet into climbing shoes. Especially, if you’ve just pulled off the ski boots. There are tons of different climbs to choose from.
